چکیده

Accurate quantum mechanical calculations of the ðJ 1⁄4 0Þ energies and lifetimes of the metastable states of ozone on a new, accurate potential energy surface are reported. These are very relevant to a famous anomalous isotope effect in the reaction that forms ozone because of their role in the energy transfer mechanism, in which metastable ro-vibrational states of ozone are formed and then stabilized by collisions with a third body. The resulting spectrum of metastable states is very dense below the delta zero-point energy threshold and sparse above it. This gives a clear qualitative explanation of why the effect occurs. ! 2003 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Semiclassical wave packet study of anomalous isotope effect in ozone formation.

We applied the semiclassical initial value representation method to calculate energies, lifetimes, and wave functions of scattering resonances in a two-dimensional potential for O+O2 collision. Such scattering states represent the metastable O3* species and play a central role in the process of ozone formation. Autocorrelation functions for scattering states were computed and then analyzed usin...

Does symmetry drive isotopic anomalies in ozone isotopomer formation?

Gao and Marcus (1) presented a modified Rice, Ramsperger, Kassel, Marcus (RRKM)– based theory to explain the strange and unconventional ozone isotope effect that has puzzled scientists for years. In earlier studies, mass spectrometric (2, 3) and diode laser (4) measurements of ozone isotopomers in “scrambled” oxygen mixtures pointed toward a symmetry origin for isotope fractionation. Kinetic st...

Unexpected variations in the triple oxygen isotope composition of stratospheric carbon dioxide.

We report observations of stratospheric CO2 that reveal surprisingly large anomalous enrichments in (17)O that vary systematically with latitude, altitude, and season. The triple isotope slopes reached 1.95 ± 0.05(1σ) in the middle stratosphere and 2.22 ± 0.07 in the Arctic vortex versus 1.71 ± 0.03 from previous observations and a remarkable factor of 4 larger than the mass-dependent value of ...

The role of symmetry in the mass independent isotope effect in ozone.

Understanding the internal distribution of "anomalous" isotope enrichments has important implications for validating theoretical postulates on the origin of these enrichments in molecules such as ozone and for understanding the transfer of these enrichments to other compounds in the atmosphere via mass transfer. Here, we present an approach, using the reaction NO(2)(-) + O(3), for assessing the...

On molecular origin of mass-independent fractionation of oxygen isotopes in the ozone forming recombination reaction.

Theoretical treatment of ozone forming reaction is developed within the framework of mixed quantum/classical dynamics. Formation and stabilization steps of the energy transfer mechanism are both studied, which allows simultaneous capture of the delta zero-point energy effect and η-effect and identification of the molecular level origin of mass-independent isotope fractionation. The central role...
